198: How to See Yourself Differently in Photos

In this episode, we’re taking a closer look at body image and the emotional reactions that can arise when we see ourselves in a mirror or photo. Instead of immediately criticizing our bodies or turning an uncomfortable feeling into a reason to diet, restrict, overexercise, or shame ourselves, we’ll explore how emotional intelligence can help us pause, identify what we’re really feeling, and separate objective observations from the stories we create about our appearance.

We’ll also unpack the idea of “feeling fat” and why there may be deeper emotions underneath that thought. You’ll learn five practical strategies to respond to body-image triggers with curiosity rather than criticism, tolerate discomfort without trying to “fix” your body, recognize automatic behaviors, create space between emotions and actions, and remember that your reflection is information—not a verdict on your worth.
